Veronica Gaillard
“To educate, to preserve the Gullah culture, to protect the African-American South Carolina heritage: through theater, story-telling, and lectures. To instill pride and appreciation for the Gullah culture.”
Informative, uplifting, humorous, tragic. Veronica introduces the Gullah culture by becoming the dramatic characters. She engages the audiences in Gullah songs and audience participation. Delighting audiences for many years, Veronica Gaillard, Actor, Storyteller, Playwright, Director, and former Drama teacher at Brentwood Middle school, continues to present to audiences theatrical presentations, and storytelling. Her latest work was at Memminger Elementary School of Global Studies where children and teachers alike performed one of her Black History plays which she directed. Ms. Gaillard began her artistic career as a member of Charleston Actors Theater Society (CATS). She developed into a principal performer. She decided to further her career and entered Benedict College where she became a member of the performing arts dance and drama troupe. They toured and performed throughout the states. She became the Assistant Director to the director of Benedict Performing Arts Company.
Highlighting her career she co-starred with the legendary actress Eartha Kitt in the play “Souls/Calah.” She translated the English words into the Gullah Dialect for the play. For the performance and collaboration, Ms. Gaillard was presented the “Key to the City” of Columbia, South Carolina by then Mayor Bob Coble.
Highlights of her theatrical performances include Storytelling for the Piccolo/Spoleto Arts Festival “Daughters’ of the Dust,” PBS’s Levar Burton “Reading Rainbow,” “Follow The Drinking Gourd,” Plays “To Kill A Mocking Bird,” “Porgy: A Gullah Version,” “Hush Dat Gullah,” “A Raisin in the Sun.” Some of her written works that she produced and directed are “My Soul Gotta in Liberty Hill,” “The Heights” and “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” a fundraiser for the AIDS Foundation.
Ms. Gaillard, an employee with Charleston County School District, is on the North Charleston Artist Roster, as well as the Approved Artist Roster of the South Carolina Art Commission. She has performed for Charleston Tells Story-Telling Festival and has also performed for Charleston county schools and libraries.
